AUF der Arbeit

Warum sagt man eigentlich, man sei AUF der Arbeit? BEI der Arbeit ist doch so viel logischer - wird ja auch verwendet. Aber AUF der Arbeit? Ich sitz doch nicht AUF meiner Arbeit... aber auch das wird verwendet. Diese Welt ist seltsam. Mein erster Erklärungsansatz: Es könnte von "auf dem Arbeitsplatz sein" kommen... hat jemand andere Erklärungen?

Ging mir nur gerade so durch den Kopf.... ;-)
